Often the requirements for a board director position are partially pre-determined based on the company’s industry, size and revenue. And since those factors are a consistent component of a board spec, it's best to start by capturing that information. Such as:

Company Name
Founding Date
Industry 
Company Type (Private by Stage, Public, Non-Profit)
Number of Employees
Annual Revenue
% Growth or Other Relevant Financials
Location(s)

From there, you will need to develop a job specification and then begin identifying candidates that match the skills you are looking for. Facilitating a skills matrix of the current board is the first step. You can do so by starting with these questions:

  • Have you already identified the knowledge gap you are trying to fill? 
  • Have you determined any additional expertise required on the board to help guide the next phase the company is preparing for?
